Setting: Fall, suburban Detroit, Michigan. At best, temps in the 40s once the sun goes down. At worst, dip below freezing. Cue coat over costume, more often than not, year after year after year, and yet, Halloween has always been, and remains, my favorite holiday.
Sure, at first it was the lure of the free Reese’s and Milky Ways, though as a Gen X’er, I also lived through the Tylenol tampering scare that also ginned up urban legends of the razor blade variety. Needless to say, bags were INSPECTED.
But it wasn’t just the candy. It was the opportunity to dress up as anything you wanted to be, even if just for one night. A practice that could not only be enjoyed by kids, but grown ups as well – though with the latter, MUST female costumes continue to focus on “Sexy (Fill in the Blank Here)”?
My adult selections have tended to be more pop culture influenced, from the ‘90s (Nancy Kerrigan, Courtney Love) to the 2010s (Lucy Van Pelt, Wilma Flintstone) and beyond. My childhood iterations also ran the gamut, of course with more parental influence and styling, from the sweet (Little Bo Peep) to the scary, including this number from… I’m gonna say circa age three for me, brother age five.
This is also what we might now call “foreshadowing.”
(For me. Far as I know, my brother is not a bloodsucker.)
Don’t worry: I’m a good witch.
Today is September 30, or as I like to call it, October Eve. The next 31 days put me square in not only my favorite month but on a countdown to figure out what I’m going to be this year. Right now, the frontrunner is my old fave: Witch. But this time, the Perimenopausal Woman Fucking Done With Men* Getting Away With Horrid Shit version.
As I said, I’m a GOOD witch.
XO,
SG
*Love-of-my-life partner and previously mentioned brother excluded. We all know what, and who, I’m speaking of… more on this next week.
